CATALYST
by Factor Eight & Nano Clow
‘Catalyst’ is an immersive and interactive audio-visual installation, showcased at @aka_artist_run, and as part of @nuitblancheyxe 2023. The project involved dance, sculpture, and digital interactivity. 4 different takes of filmed dance pieces choreographed to music created with only my voice were played simultaneously on the 4 walls, while the sculpture at the centre of the room invited the audience to interact with and manipulate both the music and dance, posing the question that by interacting, are we destroying or creating art?
This was a very collaborative project, with dance choreographed and performed by Julenne Florida, Kirk Ford, Michaila Lukowich, Liv White, Emma Stephenson, and Chloe Stephenson, overseen by choreographer Ana Solano, and filmed by Kenton Doupe.
These pieces meant something personal to each of their creators, and were originally envisioned for a different concept centred around mental health, along with other artists and pieces as well. even though that concept was adapted, it may still be realized in some capacity in the future, and I am grateful some of these pieces were able to be shown. Thankyou to every one of the dancers and artists who resonated with the theme and intention, and were willing and open to expressing and sharing their stories through movement.
So often with art our visions must adapt and flow with the waves of reality as our projects unfold. I am proud of what this project evolved into, seemingly taking on a life of its own as it continues to give rise to new opportunities.
This project was supported by @creativesask, @canadacouncil, and includes music supported by @saskarts and @factorcanada.
